For the moment it's not possible to apply for a regular passport/ID at the Consulate General in Houston.

If you would like to pick up your new passport/ID in Texas (Houston or Dallas) you can indicate this in your application for passport/ID.
If you have lost your passport or national ID card, both of which are valuable documents, you should report the loss to the Police in your location. You should then immediately call the Swedish Police or visit the Embassy to have your passport or national ID card blocked.
To block a lost passport or national ID card over the phone, call the Swedish Police on +46 77 114 14 00.
For the Consulate to be able to receive a report on the theft or loss of a passport/national ID card, a personal visit is required. Bring a copy of the police report and another valid ID document. The passport/ID card will be blocked after you have filled in and signed the loss report.
A found passport or national ID card can never be used after it has been blocked.

No, emergency passports are only issued for one-way travel to Sweden.
In exceptional cases, an emergency passport can be issued for specific and imminent travel, but this cannot be guaranteed.
Travel must be imminent (within 2-3 days) and you need to present a valid flight ticket when applying.

All people registered in Sweden receive a personal identity number as an identity code. Once you have received a personal identity number, you will keep the same number for life.
A coordination number is an identity code for those who are not or have not been registered in Sweden. A coordination number is designated as active or dormant. You can apply directly in Sweden Samordningsnummer | Skatteverket
Children and adults who have never had a Swedish passport, ID card or been registered in Sweden need to first apply for a coordination number before they can apply for a Swedish passport or national ID card Ansökan om samordningsnummer i USA - Sweden Abroad

It is currently not possible to apply for coordination number at the Consulate General in Houston. When it becomes possible, the relevant information will be posted here on our website.
It is no longer possible to apply for coordination numbers at the Honorary Consulate in Dallas, as a Honorary Consulate is not a passport authority. According to Swedish law, the application for a coordination number must be in person at a Swedish passport authority. This means that only the Embassy in Washington D.C., and our Consulate General in New York and Consulate General in San Francisco may receive and process these applications. When the Consulate General in Houston begins accepting applications for coordination number, the relevant information will be posted here on our website.

Citizenship is a legally binding relationship between a state and an individual (citizen) either automatically at birth or after registration or an application. Only those who are Swedish citizens have the right to have a Swedish passport. A Swedish citizen has an unconditional right to reside in Sweden.
If you are unsure whether you are a Swedish citizen, you can apply for a declaration of citizenship.
To avoid losing your Swedish citizenship if you were born and/or live abroad, you can apply to retain it. You must do this after the age of 18 but before you turn 22.

If your application is not registered, you can apply directly through the official site – there is no harm in submitting a new application if there is no valid ESTA.

For most Swedish citizens this does not mean any major changes, but there are some important things to be aware of, especially if you have dual citizenship.
The Police Authority recommends that you who have Swedish and other citizenship always travel with your Swedish passport when entering and leaving Sweden/EU. Border control is always based on the travel document that is presented, which may affect how you are registered when travelling.
The new systems also mean that the procedures at the EU's external borders are changing, especially for travellers from countries outside the EU.

As of May 1, 2017, you who are permanently resident abroad can no longer renew your Swedish driving license. If you are temporarily staying in the US, you can indicate in your application that you would like to pick it up at an embassy or consulate.
On September 13, 2026, there will be elections in Sweden. The Consulate General in Houston organizes vote reception and postal voting for Swedish citizens residing in Texas during Swedish elections. All Swedish citizens over 18 years of age who have been registered in Sweden are allowed to vote. Please keep in mind that you cannot vote on Election Day while abroad. Only early voting (förtidsröstning) is possible outside of Sweden.
